Why Lead Generation Is Only Half the Battle
A ringing phone is not revenue.
Where leads go to die
Unanswered calls during busy hours. Voicemails returned the next day. Estimates sent and never followed up. Web forms landing in an inbox nobody owns. None of these appear in a marketing report, and together they can consume the majority of generated demand.
Measure booked, not received
Cost per lead is a vanity metric in service businesses. Cost per booked appointment and cost per completed job reflect what the business actually gets, and they frequently re-rank channels dramatically.
Intake is a trainable skill
Booking rate varies widely between individuals handling identical inquiries. That variance is coachable: a defined opening, a clear path to offering an appointment, an answer for common objections and a habit of confirming details.
- Record and review a sample of calls weekly
- Track booking rate by person, not just by team
- Define who calls back missed inquiries, and how fast
- Give intake staff real authority to schedule
Follow-up is the cheapest growth available
Unsold estimates and lapsed customers are demand already paid for. A structured, scheduled follow-up cadence typically outperforms an equivalent increase in advertising, and it costs almost nothing beyond discipline.
